How to care for your new wig

Synthetic wigs and hair pieces are heat sensitive.  High temperatures can cause the fibers to fray or even melt.  Stay clear of high heat from cooking stoves, curling irons and other intense heat applications. Hairspray for human hair is especially damaging to a synthetic wig, and it can actually deteriorate the fibers.

Comb or brush with products made for synthetic hair.  Using an incorrect brush can frizz out the piece.  If using a regular hairbrush or comb, be sure it has the rubber “tips” at the end of each brush bristle or tooth of the comb. This will prevent the fibers from splitting, and keep the wig from looking fuzzy and dull before its time. Wide tooth brushes or picks work best or you can simply finger through the piece to restore the look.

Generally, it is recommended that a wig be washed after wearing 12-15 times in spring and summer, and after 6-8 times in fall or winter. Factors such as air quality and humidity contribute to the frequency of washing, as it does with your own hair. Always keep your own hair clean when wearing your wig to reduce washing frequency. Also, wearing a wig cap underneath your wig will help to absorb the scalp oils.

Before washing, brush straight styles gently but completely with a wire brush. Brush curly styles lightly with a vent brush or pick, keeping curls intact.

Add a cup of Wig Shampoo to a basin of cool water. Immerse wig, dousing it gently, and allow it to soak for a few minutes. Then rinse it by swishing in clean, cool water. Gently squeeze excess water from wig. To enhance its softness and revitalize your wig, apply hair conditioner or revitalizing liquid. Leave on 5 minutes and rinse well, in cool water. Gently squeeze out excess water.

On curly styles, lightly finger squeeze curls while wig is still wet.

On all styles, gently towel blot wig to remove excess wetness. Place wig on a clean dry towel and allow to air dry naturally. Do NOT comb or brush a wet wig unless you are completely restyling it. No setting is necessary; curls will snap back into position when it is completely dry.

Do NOT dry in direct sunlight. After wig is dry, shake out and style.

Always place dry wig on wig stand or foam head when not being worn. Store hair similar to the way it is to be worn.

Use only shampoo, conditioner and detangler that are specifically formulated for synthetic hair.

Human Hair products can be treated as you would treat your own hair. If wigs have been processed many times, they are vulnerable to damage.  Using specialty products for processed hair and using special care with your products is recommended.
